Petaluma’s tasting rooms are the rare thing that outgrows any romantic expectations you drag in from the city, and I say this as someone who once sprinted through a downpour to a tasting only to be told the pour was “still breathing.” You won’t find a single velvet rope here, but you will stumble onto a place where you ride a horse before you sip a Pinot and, across town, a downtown patio where Thursday live music and a story-driven Napa pour feel like a casual secret.

My job is a hazard because every week I’m torn between a bucket-list estate with a cave tour and a family barn where the host texts you a recovery note the next day. In putting together this list, I trusted my own dizzying notes and a liver that has since forgiven me.

Start at a spot where Lucy the winery pup is the main attraction, then let Shadybrook’s horseback hook rewrite your entire afternoon. The hard part won’t be choosing a winery—it’ll be leaving, so just clear your calendar and go.

Meet the winemaker personally
Pinot flights from top vineyards
Rustic-modern, welcoming tasting room
Memorable barrel room tour
Lucy, the legendary winery pup

Walking into Brooks Note feels like crashing a friend’s party, if your friend happens to make killer Pinot. I got to meet the winemaker personally, which sounds intimidating but was actually just him explaining why he loves the vineyard so much. The flights poured from top vineyards, each one a little story in a glass. Then came the barrel room tour, where the wine sleeps in oak like a bear in winter. And Lucy, the legendary winery pup? She stole the show, no contest. The room is rustic-modern, warm, and utterly welcoming. I didn’t want to leave. I think I forgot my car keys on purpose. Worth every minute.

Knowledgeable guide Aimee elevates tastings
Stellar Oro de Plata Chardonnay
Welcoming garden perfect for lingering
Organic farming, Petaluma Gap pioneers

Keller Estate is the kind of place where you feel underdressed just by existing, but somehow they let you stay. The grounds are breathtaking, immaculately kept, like a botanical garden that also happens to produce stellar wine. Our guide, Aimee, was a walking encyclopedia with a smile, and she elevated every sip into a lesson. The Oro de Plata Chardonnay? I tried to sneak a second pour. I failed, but I’m still thinking about it. They’re organic farmers and Petaluma Gap pioneers, which feels good to support. We lingered in the garden, pretending we were fancy, until the sun made us leave. I wasn’t ready. I doubt I ever will be.

Lovely rosé, perfect first taste

Parum Leo is a place I almost didn’t want to write about, because I want it all to myself. Our host was so passionate that I felt bad for not taking notes, but honestly, I was too busy laughing and sipping. The patio is beautiful, and you could easily stay all day, which I nearly did. The estate pinot noir shines so bright I considered proposing to it. Kelly added a joyful cabaret flair, singing along to her own soundtrack as she poured. And the rosé? A perfect first taste, light and happy. I left with a bottle in each hand and a grin I couldn’t shake. This is what wine tasting should feel like.

Private tours with Joanne
Gorgeous, well-kept grounds
Delicious wines, all varieties
Wine club membership perks
Memorable cave exploration

Coursey Graves feels like a secret handshake, except the handshake is a private tour with Joanne. She walked us through the grounds, which are gorgeous and well-kept, with the pride of someone who built it from the ground up. The wines? They knocked me sideways, every variety from crisp whites to deep reds. Then came the cave exploration, which is as cool as it sounds, all cool stone and barrels stacked like a cathedral. The wine club perks are tempting, but I might just visit again and again to hear Joanne’s stories. I bought more than I planned. My trunk is embarrassed, but my heart is full.

Affordable yet decent wine club
Great time with friendly vibe

Vine & Barrel is not your typical tasting room, and thank goodness for that. The selection is eclectic, pulling bottles from places I hadn’t even heard of, and the bar feels like a neighborhood hangout where everyone knows your name. Owner Jason is an awesome character, the kind of guy who tells you a joke while pouring something obscure and delicious. The wine club is affordable, which is dangerous, because I signed up before I finished my first glass. The vibe is friendly and fun, with zero pretension. I came for a quick taste and stayed three hours. My plans are always flexible, apparently. This place is a gem, and Jason is the reason why.

Brutal Hill Winery is proof that warmth and community can fit in a glass. The tasting room is cozy, with a welcome that feels like a hug from a long-lost aunt. The local food pairings were excellent, each bite making the wine taste even better, if that’s possible. The owners are knowledgeable and friendly, sharing stories about their deep roots in community events, which made me feel like I was part of something bigger. Their wine selection is wide, so I joined the club without a moment’s hesitation. I left with a full belly and a lighter heart. I might have to move nearby just to visit every weekend. Brutal? Maybe. But in the best way.

St. Francis is the kind of place that makes you slow down and breathe. The veranda food and wine pairing was a highlight, with each bite and sip working together like a well-rehearsed duet. The property is beautiful, and the self-guided vineyard walking tour let me wander among the vines, feeling very poetic and underqualified. The Cabernet and Chardonnay are fantastic, but our server Katie made the experience truly special. She knew every detail, from the soil to the barrel, and shared it with genuine enthusiasm. I lingered over my last glass, trying to memorize the view. I didn’t succeed, but I took a million photos. You’ve been warned.

Great social club for locals

McEvoy Ranch is a whole mood, and that mood is ‘relaxed luxury’. The ranch setting is stunning, and the lunch we had was superb, fresh and full of local flavor. Make sure you reserve ahead for the cheese tastings, because they are worth the planning. The olive oil pairings were generous and unexpected, turning every sip into a little celebration. And the Rosebud Rosé? It’s the kind of wine that makes you want to write poetry, even if you’re bad at it. The social club for locals sounds like a dream, but I’m not sure I’m cool enough. Still, I left feeling like I had stumbled upon a secret. I’m already plotting my return trip.

Personal, story-driven tastings

Adobe Road’s tasting room sits right in downtown Petaluma, and the patio is prime real estate for people watching and wine sipping. The Napa and Sonoma wines are premium, and the staff is so welcoming that I felt like a regular on my first visit. They told stories behind each bottle, making the tasting personal and fun. Thursday live music is apparently killer, so I’ve already marked my calendar. The vibe is casual but classy, and I could easily spend an afternoon here. I almost didn’t want to try another place, but my curiosity (and my notebook) won out. I’m pretty sure I’ll be back. The music and the wine are a dangerous combo.

The bungalow is charming, with a warmth that feels deliberate and rare. The food pairings were high-end and unexpected, each one making me close my eyes and mumble ‘oh wow’. The hospitality was warm and personal, and I felt like the only guest in the world. The tasting is intimate, set in a historic home that adds a layer of nostalgia. Fantastic wines, memorable visit

MaCo Vineyards is off the beaten path, and that’s exactly why you should go. The custom blind wine tastings were a brilliant twist, making me guess the varieties and feeling very impressed when I got one right. The host was exceptional, welcoming me like family and sharing stories that made the wines feel personal. It’s family owned and operated, and you can taste that care in every bottle. The wines themselves were fantastic, but the experience was even better. I left feeling like I made a new friend, and I’m not talking about the wine. Well, maybe a little bit about the wine. But mostly the people. This is a place that deserves a detour.

Spectacular wines, bought four bottles
Thoughtful recovery note for guests
Peaceful, private tasting experience
Friendly hosts like Pedro and Izzy

Shadybrook Estate is the stuff of dreams, and I’m pretty sure it’s because they let you ride horses before you taste wine. Yes, you read that right. Horseback riding plus tasting, and somehow they make it work. The wines were spectacular, so much so that I bought four bottles, which I regret only because I have to carry them home. The hosts, like Pedro and Izzy, were friendly and made the whole experience feel peaceful and private. They even sent a thoughtful recovery note after the tasting, which I found touching and a little funny. I felt like royalty, or at least like a very happy tourist. I can’t wait to go back. Shadybrook, I’m yours.
